Pirate Captain PreProduction

Pirate Captain

For one of my Final Major Projects for University, I will be making the Pirate Captain to a Steam Punk style flying pirate ship. This is the pre production and design process for the production, which will start soon.

Costume Designs. Tried to keep the Steam Punk aspect to the designs. I played with the basic colour schemes, but looked into it later in the design process. Eventually, I chose the third design on the second page.

In the action pose page I thought about how she would have to move, and adapted her costume to fit the ease of movement needed for running a pirate ship. I also added the hat from the second design and a pair of Steam Punk style goggles.

Here I looked at various filigree designs, hoping to incorporate some of them into the final design. Adding intricate metalwork into her costume would also make her look more imposing, and wealthy.

Hairstyles came next, looking at a few different styles from the previous designs, and adding a couple more. I settled on the original hairstyle for the design I chose, because it would be easier to model (which I will be doing later) and more practical for her boat.

Next, I looked at hair colours, thinking some bright, loud colours could inspire a new colour scheme. I eventually chose a bright, fiery red to infer her passionate nature.

I decided to look at colour schemes as a whole here, but still decided to keep the original design, though I also like the brown and tan scheme, it just didn't quite pop the same. I did however change the colour of her trousers from green to a lighter cream.

This is the first colour turnaround. As you can see I added the gold metal work, and added some more leather panels, partly for protection, and partly to attach pouches and a gun holster.

This is the second colour turnaround, where I have added her goggles, her hat and a slightly longer pirate jacket. These will be the main red items in her costume. During production I hope to play with nCloth to get a nice flow to the jacket and make it hang nicely.

I did a quick rig plan, because I will be rigging the character too. I left the hat and jacket off here, because they will be a separate issue altogether when it comes to rigging, due to the fact that I will be using cloth and dynamics.

I quickly looked into guns next, and decided to give her a pair of pirate style flintlock pistols, one for her to hold, and one to go in a holster. I was more interested in sword designing, which I'll show next.

I started with a quick page of different sword designs, also looking at daggers to strap to her legs.

I went into more detail on the hilt here. The hilt will be one of the more important aspects of the sword, as it could show the wealth of the captain, and say a lot about her character, since I probably wont be making her ship during this stretch of production. In the end I chose the first design, as it slightly resembles a bird, and hers is a flying pirate ship.

Finally I looked at scabbard designs, as it will be hanging off her belt. This means it has to be as expensive and intricate looking as all the other aspects of her costume.
