Medieval Village: Building Block Out and Quick Design Sketches

Blocking out and Designing

As my projects have changed, I've found it increasingly more difficult to work out building designs from my original tavern design.

To help get me back on track I used a method of putting several basic shapes together in the hope of creating an interesting looking building. These are two of the more basic 'general' buildings that will be populating my village scene.

Once my buildings were blocked out I took them into Photoshop, and drew around the shapes. Here I took the time to alter bits, add others and work with the proportions. Notice in the first line drawing block out, I added a curve to the roof, and slanted the top building so it would flow nicer into the bottom and look less boxy. In the second block out drawing I added stairs in place of the slope. This added a sense of proportion to the house, making it look bigger.

Finally I gave the buildings the same treatment as the original designs, adding in the doors, windows and cross beams to give it that old fashioned medieval building look. Later I will add the colour scheme to them, and give the rest of my buildings the same treatment.
